In this article, we answer the questions we are commonly asked about NeoGen Plasma treatment.
What is NeoGen plasma treatment?
Sometimes known as a NeoGen facial, NeoGen Plasma is a clinically proven treatment that uses medical-grade nitrogen to create plasma energy. This produces controlled heat within the skin, allowing precise treatment of concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, sun damage, scarring and pigmentation. It is a non-surgical procedure that supports the body’s natural generation of collagen and elastin and can be used on both the face and body.
What does NeoGen do?
NeoGen Plasma supports natural skin regeneration by stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. This can help improve skin texture, soften fine lines and reduce concerns such as enlarged pores, uneven pigmentation and milia. The treatment can be carried out on the face and body, including the eyelids, jawline and décolleté.
How does NeoGen plasma work?
During treatment, your practitioner uses a handheld device that turns medical-grade nitrogen into plasma energy. This energy is delivered to the skin to reach the deeper layers, where it supports the natural healing response and encourages collagen and elastin production. The temperature on the skin surface ranges from 70 to 165°C for a duration of 15 milliseconds. However, because oxygen on the skin is purged by the nitrogen, there’s minimal risk of burning.
As the treatment is non-surgical and non-ablative, downtime is minimal. A session normally lasts between 30 minutes and one hour, making it a convenient option to fit into a busy day.
We typically recommend a course of six treatments, with two or three maintenance sessions throughout the year.
Is it just for the face?
No. NeoGen Plasma is a versatile treatment that can also be used on the neck, chest and hands to help improve skin quality and reduce visible signs of ageing.
Is it suitable for everyone?
It is suitable for most people, but it’s not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
In addition, you cannot have NeoGen Plasma treatment if any of the following apply to you:
- Active skin disease
- A tendency to scar
- Severe acne
- Lupus, psoriasis or vitiligo
- Autoimmune disease
- Cancer
- Known allergies or sensitivities to products used during treatment
- Open wounds
- Darker skin types that may be at higher risk of pigmentation changes
- A pacemaker
If you have had recent surgery, please inform your practitioner. Medical clearance from your doctor may be required before proceeding.
Some medications can increase the risk of sensitivity, bleeding, bruising or delayed healing. These may include inhalers for asthma, insulin for diabetes, thyroxine for thyroid disorders, aspirin or ibuprofen for pain and swelling and iron supplements for anaemia. Be sure to tell your practitioner about any medication you are taking.
If treatment is planned around the eye area, contact lenses must be removed before the procedure.
How much does NeoGen plasma cost?
Treatment at The Clinic starts from £300 per session. For optimum results, we typically recommend a course of six treatments, followed by maintenance sessions two to three times a year.
Does NeoGen plasma hurt?
Comfort levels vary from person to person and depend on the intensity of the treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as mild discomfort with a feeling of warmth. If you have any concerns, just speak to our team during your consultation.
You may notice some sensitivity and swelling in the days after treatment, but this usually settles as the skin heals.
Is NeoGen plasma safe?
Yes. When carried out by a qualified practitioner, NeoGen Plasma is a safe, non-surgical treatment. It supports the body’s natural recovery process and involves minimal downtime.
Are there any side effects?
When performed by a trained professional, side effects are uncommon. You may experience temporary tightness, dryness or swelling in the hours after treatment. If you have a more intensive treatment, you may also notice bronzing or peeling, which can last for up to a week.
Does NeoGen plasma really work?
Yes. NeoGen Plasma has clinically proven results. The treatment supports the production of structural proteins, which can help rejuvenate, firm and smooth the skin.
Many well-known individuals have chosen NeoGen Plasma (such as Leslie Ash, Shirley Ballas and Linda Lusardi), and the results can be seen in the before-and-after images below (courtesy of Dr Johanna Ward).
How long does NeoGen plasma last?
It depends on your skin, your age, the issues being treated and the intensity of the treatment itself. You’ll start to see the results immediately, but these will continue to develop over the next three months as your body starts to produce more collagen and elastin, making skin look plumper and tighter over time.
However, the results of NeoGen treatment can last from 12 months to two years. You can extend the effects by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition and exercise, as well as using skincare products such as sunscreen, serums and moisturisers.
Does NeoGen Plasma affect existing dermal filler?
No. NeoGen Plasma does not affect existing dermal filler, although we recommend allowing at least four weeks after your treatment. Please mention any recent filler during your consultation.
What should I do to prepare for NeoGen Plasma treatment?
We recommend avoiding sun exposure for three weeks before treatment and using a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen during this time. Stop using retinol products, AHAs, BHAs and any exfoliating treatments in the week leading up to your appointment.
Arrive well hydrated, as this can support treatment performance. It is also best to avoid alcohol, anti-inflammatories and antihistamines beforehand.
On the day of your appointment, apply moisturiser but avoid makeup and perfume.
